Why Floating Foundations?

Point loads ! Steel arch buildings do not have columns or " point loads, " their design is based on an evenly distributed load down the length of the building. Without point loads there is nothing to resist the frost, therefore, below grade, below frost foundations are not required.....  above grade  Floating Foundations are the " Engineers  choice "  for Steel Arch Buildings.


Why It Works

  99 %  of the concrete slab strength comes from the yeild strength of the steel rebar supplied with this system.........   it is not the compression strength of the concrete.

This foundation slab design is based on a minimum 20 MPA concrete strength. 25 MPA concrete is common for typical concrete floors and  32 MPA is used for Commercial floors.   The increase in slab strength going from 25 MPA  to 32 MPA  however , normally a signifigant increase in slab strength at a premium cost, is only about one half of one percent ( .05% )...... " Floating slabs reinforced with steel bar ( not welded wire fabric or fibre reinforcement ) are subject to flexural loads; under these circumstances, the slab strength is governed by the yeild strength of the rebar and its position in the slab, and the 28 day compressive strength of the concrete has no significant effect."

Heat And Frost

Heated floors require a good insulation to eliminate heat loss through the ground, and cold storagae slabs may require frost protection.  The floating Floor foundation was designed with several insulation methods in mind.  The ultimate choice is 2" SM   ( R-15 styrofoam panels )  The form has been designed to float on the SM, the density of which is in excess of compaction design requirements as stated on your Engineered Drawings.... position the SM so two feet is inside the form and two feet is outside the form. The result is the frost will not penetrate the ground around the outer perimeter of the building and come up under the slab, nor will the heat escape through the floor....or fill the entire floor area for maximum benifit. 


If you are planning on using an in-floor radiant heat system... which this Floating Floor Foundation form was specifically designed to accompany... you can place the solar sheets supplied with the system in the same manner as discribed above...... or a combination of both.
